And the What the Truck?! Golden Ticket Winners are…

All season, attendees to our What the Truck?! events this year have filled in feedback cards and posted pictures, in the hopes of winning a pre-entry pass to our final event of the year.

We’re ready to announce our two winners of the coveted Golden Tickets: congratulations to Stephanie Gonzales and Rosemary!

Stephanie won by filling out a form at our August 22 event at Telus Field (though being a food blogger, she also wrote a rad post about What the Truck?! at Northlands Park, too).

Rosemary tagged a photo at our June 14 Brunch on the Boulevard with the hashtag #wttgolden ticket.

Both Stephanie and Rosemary will be able to bring a friend for exclusive access to the trucks in the twenty minutes leading up to the start of our September 11, 2015 Churchill Square finale.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the contest!

Wrap-Up: June 14, 2015 Brunch on the Boulevard

Thanks to everyone who came out to our first ever brunch event this past Sunday!

What the Truck?! at Capital Boulevard

For a few hours, we took over a part of Capital Boulevard and the south of Centennial Plaza next to the renovated Federal Building. Attendees enjoyed a pristine view of the Legislature Building from the grounds, and the ample seating spaces on the square. The rain clouds even held off for the most part that afternoon.

June 14, 2015 What the Truck?! Does Brunch on the Boulevard

Some of the feedback we’ve received in previous seasons pointed to a desire for more themed What the Truck?! events. So we’re delivering, with Brunch on the Boulevard!

What: What the Truck?! at Capital Boulevard
Where: 108 Street & 99 Avenue
When: Sunday, June 14, 2015
Time:11am-3pm
RSVP on Facebook!

This will be an opportunity to not only explore some of the new features of Capital Boulevard/108 Street, but also to check out the new Centennial Plaza, behind the newly-renovated Federal Building. If we’re lucky, the fountains might even be on for us! The Legislature and Visitor Centre will also be open from 9am-5pm, with free tours offered during that time. Come for brunch and a history lesson!

Centennial PlazaPicture by Chris Vander Hoek

We’ll have fifteen trucks on hand that morning, all of which will be serving up at least one brunch-inspired item. The participating trucks are:

We’ll be releasing the menus next week, so stay tuned!

We’re also fortunate that DJs Thomas Culture and Polyesterday will be joining us that day! Check Thomas out on SoundCloud.

Meet the Organizers: Su Dennis

Last but not least, we’d like to introduce you to Su Dennis. Some of you may recognize Su, as she’s been one of our long-standing day-of volunteers:

supersu at the market304303_10151267336291504_1747484555_n

1. My day job is…

Nuclear Medicine Technologist and I work for the great group of folks at Medical Imaging Consultants.

2. Why did you decide to get involved in What the Truck?!

I decided to get involved with What the Truck because I want these events to continue; i want them to become bigger and better, and i want them to happen more often. I am pleased to be a new member of the planning committee, and will be helping with event day site set-up and clean-up, waste management and volunteer recruitment. If anyone reading this would like to volunteer on event days, drop me a line.

3. What is one of your favourite local food truck items?

Asking what my favorites are, is like asking a mother, ‘who her favorite child’ is. Just cant be limited to one! I LOVE sandwiches and burgers. I LOVE fried stuff. I LOVE dessert items. I LOVE trying new-to-me flavors. So i guess you could say, i just plain LOVE food truck food!

4. What is one type of food truck cuisine you’d like to see served curbside in Edmonton?

I think there are so many trucks out there now, it would be hard to conceive of any type of cuisine that is not served in #yeg! I have never been left wanting, that is for sure.

5. What about the food truck scene are you most looking forward to in 2015?

I am excited to try some of the new trucks, and to welcome back all of my old favorites. In the heat of the season, I have been known to eat food truck food MANY times each week. My goal is to try as many new trucks as I can.

Meet the Organizers: Mikhaila Skehor

Next up in our series highlighting our new organizing committee members, we’d like to introduce Mikhaila Skehor:

mikhailaheadshot

1. My day job is…

Account Manager at Kick Point, a digital marketing agency located in downtown Edmonton.

2. Why did you decide to get involved in What the Truck?!

Like many Edmontonians, I live for when the weather is decidedly not-winter, and one of my favourite parts of the summer is to hit up the many What the Truck?! events (and the trucks that attend them) and experience the variety of cuisine they offer. It didn’t hurt that my dear friend Melina is also on the organizing committee, and had a blast being involved last year. I saw how much fun she was having and wanted in!

3. What is one of your favourite local food truck items?

I’d have to go with Attila the HUNgry’s chicken and waffles. The savory/sweet syrup combined with a healthy topping of kimchi makes it a must-have for me. Last year, I attended almost every chicken and waffle serving they had thanks to the HUNgry team tweeting me when it was C&W day!

4. What is one type of food truck cuisine you’d like to see served curbside in Edmonton?

This is majorly impractical, but I’d love a pho truck. Pho is one of my favourite things to eat and I wish I could find it on a truck.

5. What about the food truck scene are you most looking forward to in 2015?

I’m looking forward to trying out all the new trucks on the scene. Food trucks in Edmonton have exploded and I’m excited to try out the new offerings, and learn about the all the behind the scenes action at WTT?!

Meet the Organizers: Katherine Tam

We’re nearly ready to announce the details of our first event of the season, but in the mean time, we’re happy to say that our What the Truck?! team has expanded! We’ve welcomed three new faces to our organizing committee, and over the next few weeks, we will be introducing each of them.

First up, Katherine Tam:

Katherine

1. My day job is…

I work for a couple of trucking companies doing the accounting and helping run the offices.

2. Why did you decide to get involved in What the Truck?!

I have been a fan of What the Truck for awhile and absolutely love the energy it brings to Edmonton and wanted to be a part of it.

3. What is one of your favourite local food truck items?

Drift’s pork belly sandwich! I tried it at Taste of Edmonton a few years ago and starting following them everywhere which eventually lead me to a What’s the Truck event so you can say it was my “gateway” food truck item.

4. What is one type of food truck cuisine you’d like to see served curbside in Edmonton?

Dim Sum!

5. What about the food truck scene are you most looking forward to in 2015?

Looking forward to all the new trucks.

What the Truck?! is Recruiting!

If you love food trucks and attending food events and have thought about getting involved to become more than an attendee, then you might be interested in joining the What the Truck?! organizing committee!

What the Truck?! at Churchill Square

We’re looking for a few additional members to pitch in with the coordination of our 2015 season and beyond. Some of the responsibilities include:

  • Liaising with food vendors
  • Event planning
  • Assisting with event promotion, primarily through social media
  • Day-of site setup, troubleshooting and clean-up
  • Management of online presence
  • Coordinating volunteers
  • Working with partners and sponsors
  • Financial management

While the festival season for us runs May through September, we’re already in planning mode. The time commitment is approximately 5-10 hours per month in February to April and 15-20 hours during festival season.

If you’re interested, please send us an e-mail by March 4, 2015 with answers to the following questions:

  1. Why do you want to join the What the Truck?! organizing committee?
  2. What skills and experiences can you offer the team?
  3. Have you ever been to a What the Truck?! event? What suggestions do you have for us?

Someone will be in touch with you after March 4.

Thanks for your interest!
